Smithora naiadum

Smithora naiadum is a red alga often occurring as an epiphyte on surfgrass in California.  Smithora naiadum appears as small purple membranous blades 1-5 cm in length that arise from a small holdfast on the thin blades of surfgrass.  This picture was taken on a light table and not at the surfgrass beds from Fort Point, San Francisco Bay.

The same comments from above apply here.

During a low tide at the surfgrass beds of Fort Point, San Francisco Bay, Smithora naiadum is seen as small drying blades on the surfgrass Phyllospadix scouleri .
