Halichondria bowerbanki Burton, 1930

                                                           ŠLuis A. Solorzano 2003

This sponge is not native to California, rather it is native to the Atlantic Ocean.  It entered  San Francisco Bay in either shipments of Atlantic oysters or as fouling organisms on ships. Sponge identification is also very difficult.  It relies upon use of a microscope to identify the structure of the spicules or "spines" that make up a sponge.
