Major Collections
Approximately 30,500 solifuge specimens or specimen
lots are housed in collections around the world. These collections are a
valuable resource, serving as something of a 'lending library' from which
researchers borrow material for study. It is largely through the study of
specimens from these collections that our understanding of the taxonomy and
phylogeny of the Solifugae develops. Approximately 48% of this material is
identified, and only 35% is databased. The largest collections, including
50% of the world’s unprocessed material, are housed in southern Africa, while
the bulk of the type specimens (54%) reside in European institutions.
